Each year, we spend hundreds of dollars renting movies to watch at home, heading to theaters to watch the latest films and taking out delivery services such as NetFlix. We also spend hundreds of dollars on larger-than-life televisions, high definition technology and satellite TV subscriptions. While some Americans find the balance economically easy to make, others do not. With more and more of us trying to find ways to cut costs these days, it is time to start looking towards television and film entertainment as a way to save.

The decision between the two can be tough, but not impossible. What’s great about satellite TV is that with all of the channels it has available, it can largely replace the need to rent, buy and go see movies. While it cannot equal the experience of sitting in a theater, it can certainly compete. And in these tougher economic times, it just might win.

First and foremost, satellite TV packages offer tons of film channels such as HBO, Cinemax and Showtime. These channels feature some of the latest films as well as several great and often edgy television shows. Release time frames for rental and television release are comparable, meaning the wait should be about the same. While not all movies are featured on HBO and Showtime, some of the best are. Moreover, they are repeated, meaning you can re-watch the ones you really like without having to pay.

There are also several specialty film channels available on satellite TV. Turner Classic Movies and the International Film Channel, for example, feature specific types of films. Not only are the movies seen on these channels entertaining, but they are also different. You may find yourself watching and enjoying things you would have never picked out for yourself at a theater or in Blockbuster. These channels can turn television movie watching into an education experience, introducing you to different styles and ideas.

Apart from all of these film-specific channels, don’t forget that other more general-programming stations often feature movies as well. While these movies may not be the newest of the bunch, they are often among the best. Old favorites like Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club and hundreds of others can be found on channels like TNT and VH1 all of the time. While you may not be willing to rent such movies that you’ve seen so many times before, you will be quite likely to spend a Saturday afternoon watching them while taking a walk down memory lane.

When you’re looking to make cuts in your budget this year when it comes to viewing entertainment, don’t get too upset if downsizing means less rented movies and less nights at the cinema. You may be surprised at how well satellite TV can serve as a sufficient substitute to meet most of your film needs and desires.
